Specialized Dosage Forms
Medications can be compounded into dosage forms that are more suitable for treating each patient. For topical or transdermal administration, the desired active ingredient(s) can be compounded into creams, ointments, and gels.
For medications to be absorbed transdermally, an appropriate base and proper compounding technique must be used. Medication is easily measured using an oral-topical dispenser.
Convenient applicators are available to deliver medication directly to an affected place such as your lips. When a medication is applied topically, we may require less active ingredient(s) as compared to oral administration, so the risk of systemic side effects is also minimized.
Convenient Forms for Most Medications
- Lollipops — Lollipops are an effective way to keep medication in contact with the oral mucosa and are also an appealing dosage form for children.
- Suppositories — Suppositories continue to be one of the most popular dosage forms. Unique designs such as the "rectal rocket" allow simultaneous internal and external medication administration.
- Troches — Troches can be placed between the cheek and gum where they dissolve. Medication is absorbed through the mucosa to provide another substitute for oral administration. Flavored gelatin forms can be chewed and swallowed.
